Understanding Needle Types and Depths in Dermarollers and Dermaneedling:
Dermarollers and dermaneedling devices come in various types, each designed to address specific skin concerns. Additionally, they feature different needle lengths, influencing the depth of penetration into the skin. Understanding these variations is crucial for achieving optimal results while ensuring a safe and effective skincare routine.
Needle Types:
  1. Titanium Needles:
    • Titanium needles are durable and resistant to corrosion, making them a popular choice for dermarollers. They provide a smooth and precise rolling or stamping motion, promoting even coverage during the procedure.
  2. Stainless Steel Needles:
    • Stainless steel needles are another common material for dermarollers. They are sturdy and resist rust, offering longevity. Some individuals may prefer the weight and feel of stainless steel needles during the rolling process.
  3. Microneedle Tips (Dermaneedling Devices):
    • Dermaneedling devices often feature microneedle tips made of high-quality materials such as surgical steel or medical-grade plastic. These tips are designed for controlled penetration and are suitable for more targeted treatments.
Needle Depths:
  1. 0.25mm to 0.5mm:
    • Ideal for beginners and those looking to improve product absorption and general skincare. This needle length is relatively shallow, causing minimal discomfort and allowing for more frequent use. This dermaroller can also be used on beards and heads.
  2. 0.75mm to 1.0mm:
    • Suitable for addressing mild skin imperfections, such as fine lines, shallow acne scars, and enlarged pores. This range stimulates collagen production more intensively and is often used on a bi-weekly to monthly basis. This dermaroller comes in 1.0mm.
  3. 1.5mm to 2.0mm:
    • Reserved for more advanced users or professional treatments. These longer needles penetrate deeper into the skin, making them effective for addressing deeper scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks. Use at this depth may require longer intervals between sessions to allow for proper healing. If you are looking for a dermaroller that is 1.5 or longer, these two dermarollers work great.  This is the 2.0mm dermaroller
Numbing cream proves effective for depths ranging from 1.00mm to 3.5mm in dermarolling or dermapen procedures. To apply the cream, generously cover the targeted area and seal it with plastic wrap. Allow the cream to sit for at least 30 minutes under the wrap to ensure optimal numbing. The plastic wrap retains heat, activating the cream and preventing it from drying out. Maintain the wrap during the procedure for the full numbing effect. Before dermarolling, remove the wrap, wipe off the numbing cream, and cleanse your skin with rubbing alcohol. Ensure your skin is moisturized with a serum, preferably hyaluronic acid, to facilitate smooth gliding of the roller or pen. Seize the opportunity to apply a beneficial serum during the procedure, as the needles create pathways for deeper absorption. After dermarolling, use a face mask if available and follow up with serum or moisturizer. Avoid washing your face, leaving the products on until the next day. If done in the morning or afternoon, gently wash your face the following day and resume your skincare routine, excluding exfoliants, acids, and irritating products.
The day after, gently cleanse your face without using harsh chemicals or scrubs. If your skin tolerates it, incorporate vitamin C, but wait 48 hours post-dermarolling to do so. Avoid AHAs or BHAs. But Retinoids can be used to give a superficial peel. A study demonstrated improved scar appearance by using tretinoids 0.05% immediately after dermarolling with a 1.5mm needle. They allowed the tretinoid cream to sit on the dermarolled skill for 30 minutes, then washing it off. Combining this with 15% TCA peels done two weeks later yielded significant results. The study is titled “Combination Therapy in the Management of Atrophic Acne Scars.”

Choosing the Right Needle Length:
  1. Safety First: For at-home use, it’s generally recommended to start with shorter needles and progressively move to longer ones as your skin becomes accustomed to the procedure. Also make sure you clean the rollers every time you are done with them. It is recommended to clean them with soap and once you want to use it again sanitize it with rubbing alcohol. The best device to clean them with are the disposable mascara wands. They can really get into hard to reach places and clean between the needles. If you are using a derma pen. It is recommended to through away the disposable head.
  2. Skin Concerns: Tailor the needle length to your specific skin concerns. Shorter needles are suitable for general maintenance, while longer needles are more targeted for specific issues.
  3. Consult a Professional: If you’re unsure about which needle length to use, consider consulting with a dermatologist or skincare professional. They can provide personalized advice based on your skin type, concerns, and tolerance.
Incorporating dermarollers and dermaneedling into your skincare routine involves a thoughtful consideration of needle types and depths. By understanding these variations and selecting the right tools for your needs, you can unlock the full potential of these skincare techniques while prioritizing safety and efficacy.
